Development Insights:
Over the last two years, we have conducted extensive research on the F Chassis. The original turbocharger fitted to these vehicles is a compact MHI unit, which has proven to be undersized for the airflow capacity from by these engines.
Our extensive tuning experience ensures that every product undergoes rigorous testing and validation before it leaves the workshop. We fully understand the limitations of the original B46 motor and early MHI turbocharger. While some may consider the early B46 to be weak and fragile, the true issues often stem from misattributed factors such as fuel quality combined with aggressive tuning and a lack of understanding of engine combustion. Although the early B46 is not as robust as the B46TU motor, it can perform exceptionally well when maintained in a healthy combustion environment with a conservative torque cap.
Without getting overly technical, let's clarify what works and what doesn’t, allowing you to make informed decisions. Many enthusiasts mistakenly believe that fitting an intake, intercooler, and downpipe will instantly transform their car into a powerhouse. However, we found this approach is often misguided and heavily influenced by marketing and social media experts.
We conducted back-to-back tests, tuning the MHI OEM unit with full OEM hardware, followed by configurations that included high-flow downpipes, upgraded intercoolers, and aftermarket intakes. We even developed a high-flow turbo inlet back in 2019. The result? Regardless of supporting modifications, the OEM MHI turbo operates efficiently up to 260 whp and 270 ft-lbs of torque. Exceeding these figures results in excessive backpressure, which can ultimately damage your motor. While investments in upgraded intercoolers, high-flow downpipes, and intake systems won't hurt, they typically do not provide significant benefits for this application.
In our pursuit of better performance, we explored upgrading the OEM MHI unit to a hybrid turbo. Unfortunately, we found that its core size was inadequate for a beneficial hybrid build. Our evaluation of various hybrid units revealed disappointing quality and customer support, which led us to the GP3 OEM Turbocharger proven effective in tuning GP3 cars.
To validate the GP3 turbo's performance, we installed it on pre-LCI models and logged significant mileage to assess the upgrade's advantages. The results were impressive: the GP3 turbocharger is a well-engineered unit that enhances pressure balance and fosters a healthier combustion environment compared to the original MHI turbo. We achieved 300 whp and 300 ft-lbs of torque on 93 Octane with the OEM catalytic converter, along with an additional 30 whp and 50 ft-lbs tq using an E30 blend.
This turbocharger allows you to bypass unnecessary modifications while ensuring compliance with emissions standards and maintaining true OEM functionality. Positive feedback from existing customers led us to develop an OEM+ installation package that includes:
Please Note: To tune for higher ethanol content, the factory Direct Injection system is limited. Based on our testing, pushing this unit beyond 330 whp can lead to high backpressure conditions, which we aim to avoid in order to protect your engine's stock internals. You may wonder how GP3 manages to deliver more power with the same unit. The GP3 turbo is fitted with the B48TU motor, allowing it to deliver an additional 15-20 whp due to its stronger engine and lower compression ratio, making it more tune-friendly under similar conditions.
Information on Tune Support:
We offer a convenient remote tuning service for your vehicle using the OBD2 One flasher and the BootMode flasher system. This allows us to tune your car efficiently and effectively.
Please note that even if your vehicle is a pre-LCI model, some firmware versions may have OBD2 Flash locked. In such cases, you will need to ship your DME (Digital Motor Electronics) to us for OBD2 Flash unlocking, which we provide free of charge!
If the listed options do not meet your needs, or if you already own BootMode or any other flashing dongle, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're happy to review your options and provide tailored support!
